Anne and I were driving home from a wedding and I came up with the words while I was behind the wheel. The original is actually written in Anne's handwriting on the back of the wedding invitation. It is based on a conversation I had with my sister, about how my niece Erin became an expert at stalling before bedtime at a very young age.
I’m Not Sleepy
The sun’s going down little Stella, the moon’s coming up in the sky
So put on your PJ’s little Stella it’s time to go beddy-bye
But I’m not sleepy, I’m not sleepy
I don’t wanna say goodnight
I still gotta put my toys away ‘cause they’re all over the place
Gotta put my blocks back in their box and my tuba in its case
I can’t go to bed and rest my head, I can’t go to sleep and count my sheep
I still gotta put my toys away ‘cause they’re all over the place
The sun’s going down little Stella, the moon’s coming up in the sky
So put on your PJ’s little Stella it’s time to go beddy-bye
But I’m not sleepy, I’m not sleepy
I don’t wanna say goodnight
I still gotta care for dolly, ‘cause she really needs my help
And I think she needs a drink , she can’t get one for herself
I can’t go to bed and rest my head, I can’t go to sleep and count my sheep
I still gotta care for dolly, ‘cause she really needs my help
The sun’s going down little Stella, the moon’s coming up in the sky
So put on your PJ’s little Stella it’s time to go beddy-bye
But I’m not sleepy, I’m not sleepy
I don’t wanna say goodnight
Read me one more story, the one about the baby bird
Or the Cat in the Hat or a bunny named Pat I’ll stay awake for every word
I can’t go to bed and rest my head, I can’t go to sleep and count my sheep
Read me one more story, the one about the baby bird
The sun’s gone down little Stella
The moon is up in the sky
You put on your PJ’s little Stella
And you went beddy bye
You were so sleepy, You were so sleepy
But you didn’t wanna say goodnight
