I learned this one from the TV show 'Little House on the Prairie,' where it was often sung by Mr. Edwards, the gruff mountain man with a penchant for swilling moonshine from a ceramic jug. I sang it from memory, over 20 years later, and kept it simple as possible.
OLD DAN TUCKER
Now Old Dan Tucker was a fine old man
He washed his face in a frying pan
Combed his hair with a wagon wheel
And died with a toothache in his heel
Get outta the way Old Dan Tucker
You’re too late to get your supper
Supper’s over and dinner’s cooking
Old Dan Tucker just stands there a-looking
Old Dan Tucker he come to town
Riding a billy goat and leading a hound
Hound dog barked and the billy goat jumped
Landed Dan Tucker on top of the stump
Get outta the way Old Dan Tucker
You’re too late to get your supper
Supper is over and dinner’s cooking
Old Dan Tucker just stands there a-looking
Old Dan tucker he come to town
Swinging the ladies round and round
First to the right and then to the left
And then to the girl that he loves best
Get outta the way Old Dan Tucker
You’re too late to get your supper
Supper is over and dinner’s cooking
Old Dan Tucker just stands there a-looking
